The Heart (1950) [DVD] - A vintage Science & Biology Film

The Heart (1950) [DVD] - A vintage Science & Biology Film Review

The film explores everything having to do with the health, disease, and mechanics of the heart, featuring striking vintage footage. The accomplished writer John Kieran narrates as scenes having to do with health and exercise, including men doing construction work and running in a race, illuminate the screen. The film offers many tips on how to achieve heart health, including warming up before running and avoiding sudden activities. In the spirit of exploring all aspects of the heart, a woman is shown having a heart attack.  Overall, this is a phenomenal vintage movie about the heart and how important it is.

Somebody Up There Likes Me

Somebody Up There Likes Me Review

"World's Leading Boxers Train Here Daily" says a sign outside Stillman's Gym. Thomas Rocco Barbella isn't a boxer. He's just a scrappy, desparate youth who needs dough. So he enter's the bym, give himself the made-up name of Rocky Graziano, signs on to spar for ... and flattens a top light-heavyweight. The name sticks. so does the impac of this inspiring tale about Graziano's rise from poverty and rage to the middleweight title. In his second film, Paul Newman plays the ring king, preparing for the role in part by meeting with Graziano to study his speech and ways. Robert Wise who earlier captured the fight game in "The Set-Up", directs this couble Academy Award winner with K.O. force. Unbilled Steve McQueen and Robert Loggia add to the film's many pleasures. Pull up a ringside seat.

Flesh for Frankenstein

Flesh for Frankenstein Review

Maverick filmmaker Paul Morrissey's "Flesh for Frankenstein" reevaluates the horror film, infusing it with satiric wit and sexuality. Morrissey's tale of the mad Baron Frankenstein and his perverse creative urges was heavily edited upon initial release; Criterion presents the restored director's cut--fully intact after 20 years. "Presented" by Andy Warhol.

Quicksilver Highway

Quicksilver Highway Review

Christopher Lloyd stars as Quicksilver, a delightful collector of oddities. After a newlywed couple's car breaks down, the husband goes off for help. Along comes Quicksilver in his Rolls Royce, offering the fearsome bride refuge. He then tells her a story of a traveling salesman who stops at a rustic little diner and is given a set of "chattering teeth" as a birthday present. He picks up a hitchhiker and trouble follows. In the second story, Matt Frewer plays a petty pickpocket who meets Lloyd in his house of oddities and is todl the story of a plastic surgeon whose hands stage a revolt against him for their independence.

Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters Review

Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs). The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of original ideas about hobgoblins--who knew they could "slime" people with green plasma goo?--but hovering above the plot is Murray's patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious model for sci-fi comedies such as Men in Black. --Tom Keogh

The Firm Parts: Sculpted Buns, Hips & Thighs

The Firm Parts: Sculpted Buns, Hips & Thighs Review

A tough, extra-motivating video featuring orchestra and jazz-type music and The Firm's usual movie-quality production. Tracy Long's precise cuing and constantly-changing moves guarantees a shapely, well-defined body. A short, intense all-floorwork program with lots of tempo and movement variations. These classic routines are precision-targeted to those familiar "trouble spots": your abs, thighs and buttocks. There's a "choreographed" feel to this workout - Tracy makes it interesting by constantly alternating the exercises and varying the pace (e.g. fast, slow, pulsed; with and without weights). Requires 8 to 20 lb. dumbbells and 3 to 5 lb. ankle weights. Re-edited from The Firm's Tortoise and Hare. Formerly titled "Lie Down and Work Out." ©1996 (37 min.).

How to Make A Lot of Money and Keep It, Part II

How to Make A Lot of Money and Keep It, Part II Review

Dr. Nerenberg owned and operated a multi-million dollar company and sold it for over a million dollars back in the time when that was a lot of money. In presenting his unique approach he quotes his father, who never finished high school because he had to help support his mother since the age of 12. His father, Sam Nerenberg, said, Son, I have a lot of good advice to give you; not because Ive been so smart. Its just because I have been so stupid. His father became a multi-millionaire using honest street smarts. Dr. Nerenberg discusses the importance of being the first one to the office and the last one to leave. He illustrates how to harness the power of the greatest experts, your employees. He discusses the importance of risk-taking with wisdom, loyalty, and fairness. An important principle of his approach is to always be positioned to fully exploit a Lucky Break. He is also an expert on corporate mergers, sales psychology, tax and cost control, and asset protection. He shares his experiences and insights in a new and refreshing manner. The presentation gives highly practical tools based on real life experiences. Fully applying any one of his pointers can make you rich and save you a fortune.

Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell

Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell Review

Though it wasn't Hammer Studios' final film, Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell can be considered its swan song, an intelligent, inventive, stylized reworking of the themes that had sustained the series for almost two decades. Dr. Frankenstein has buried his old identity and reigns over an insane asylum as Dr. Victor (Peter Cushing under a flamboyant blond wig in his sixth and final turn as the mad scientist) as if it were a live-parts yard for his continuing experiments. With the help of an ambitious acolyte he builds his latest creature, a hirsute apelike brute stitched together from the asylum's most promising inhabitants and turned into a sad, tortured slave. The film was shot at the end of Hammer's glory days, and the budgetary constraints can be seen in unconvincing miniatures and the rather bulky and stiff ogre suit, but the dark, claustrophobic sets create an effectively gloomy atmosphere. Director Terence Fisher effectively pulls out all stops for a marvelous sequence of the creature digging through the asylum graveyard in the middle of a flashing electrical storm, a demonic twist on the iconic gravedigging images that go all the way back to the 1931 Frankenstein. This was the last reunion for Cushing and Fisher, who together gave birth to Hammer's gothic reign with The Curse of Frankenstein and Horror of Dracula. Fisher retired after finishing the film. --Sean Axmaker

Body of Evidence (Unrated Version) [VHS]

Body of Evidence (Unrated Version) [VHS] Review

Madonna isn't merely the prime suspect in the scandalous murder of a millionaire with kinky appetites; she's the murder weapon itself in this erotic thriller in the Basic Instinct mode. The art gallery owner by day and icy-blond dominatrix by night is accused of, shall we say, "loving" her victim to death, and Willem Dafoe is the happily married lawyer she lures into the dark thrills of pleasure and pain. The actual mystery is perfunctory at best and the absurd courtroom theatrics a mere formality in a film far more fascinated with sweaty sex, hot wax, and broken glass. Madonna isn't shy about her body and seems to enjoy the games her character plays, but she's no Sharon Stone; there's no danger smoldering behind her seduction. Like her notorious book Sex, this is a handsomely shot work of pure exhibitionism. --Sean Axmaker
